South Australian based Composer, Producer and Bass player Ross McHenry spoke with David Moyle about his Voyage of Exploration including compositional extremes and his brand new album Nothing Remains Unchanged.
Ross has composed for groups of three up to a full orchestra, and notes the need to be so much more careful when writing for large groups, and commenting about feeling so much more nervous waiting for the orchestra to perform his work than he has ever felt when performing his own works.
Ross believes that Australian Music has a unique sense of the Australian Experience about it, and can hear the ‘Melbourne’ experience in music from Paul Grabowsky as an example.
The new album features nine of Ross’ compositions reflecting on both his ‘current experience’ at the time of composing the music for the album, and his past experiences – both practical and emotional.
Ross composed the music whilst in residency in Banff, Canada at the Leighton Artist Colony.
