Drummer Alex Hirlian’s Arcing Wires are set to light up the Wangaratta Festival Of Jazz and Blues with their Jazz-Rock repertoire on Friday October 30 at 8:15pm.
Winner of the National Jazz Award (NJA) in 2018, Alex has taken his 5-piece group on a tour though Queensland, New South Wales, Canberra, Victoria, and South Australia, as well as a mini-tour of Europe, including the NJA Award performance at the Amersfoort Jazz Festival.
Described by pianist Mike Nock as “today’s jazz for a new audience“, Arcing Wires plays contemporary instrumental music combining their improvised Jazz with Progressive Rock written by all 5 members – Nish Manjunath (Tenor Sax), Felix Lalanne (Guitar), Yutaro Okuda (Guitar), Nick Henderson (Bass), Alex Hirlian (Drums).
Alex chats with David Moyle about where the groups’ name came from (yes, it does have an electrical connection!), his personal take-away from winning the NJA, and how the group have been playing together since university.
Alex Hirlian was guest of Bent Notes on Sunday October 18, 2020
