Sam’s Bell Across a Field as Vast as One

Sam Anning visited the Bent Notes studio to chat with David Moyle about winning this year’s Australian Jazz Bell Award for the Best Australian Instrumental Jazz Album.   The album – “Across A Field As Vast As One” also won last years Music Victoria Jazz Album of the year award.

It is an album inspired by world events and the passing of the late Melbourne drummer Allan Browne, who advised Sam that “everything will be alright.”

Hear how Sam selected the musicians (Sam’s Heroes) to play on the album and how one of the challenges when recording these days is finding a great piano to record with.

The piece “Talking Wall” was a more mathematical creation, written without access to a musical instrument – Sam heard it for the first time when he put the sheet music in front of the band members!

We’ll also keep our ears peeled for Sam’s next album due out early next year.

Sam Anning was guest of Bent Notes on Sunday September 29, 2019
