Sonja Hammer delves into the Zine scene with BROAD regular Bianca Martin. Bianca is a zine maker, a volunteer at zine workshop Sticky Institute, and a member of feminist punk band The Girl Fridas.
Zines are DIY, hand-made and self-published magazines. They tend to cover personal, subversive content that commercial, academic or mainstream media normally wouldn’t cover. This makes them the perfect medium for feminist, anti-patriarchy and anti-capitalist publications. You can make your own zines with whatever you have to hand at home, your local library, or at places like Sticky Institute in the Degraves Subway (where you can also buy zines from other creators).
Bianca’s recommended zines include Queenie, which looks at colonialism and feminism in Australia, and Femmes to the Front, about femininity and feminism. She’s also just released a zine called Fangirl which you can get at Sticky Institute.
Podcaster Jacqui recommends Fucked: On being sexually dysfunctional in sex-positive queer scenes which you can buy as a PDF on Etsy.
Bianca and Sonja give shout outs to a ton of feminist punk bands, and songs played this week include It’s Obvious by The Au Pairs, Daggers by The Girl Fridas, and God Damn by Chastity Belt.
