Defining a Hero

Video Games

This week on the show, we’re here to talk about what defines a hero in video games. Heroes are a massive part of video game culture (and pop culture overall really). They’re brave, iconic and they’re everything we aspire to be. Or are they? We look at the concept of heroes in-depth across video game history, including morals, the anti-hero, choice based mechanics and of course some of our favourite video game heroes.

Join Luke, Elliot, Kieren and Jason as they discuss what makes a hero heroic in the first place. Is it the choices they make? Does a good hero always need a good villain counterpart? Can we really call characters like Lara Croft and Nathan Drake heroes when they kill a whole bunch of people in every game they are in? How do heroes evolve over time across multiple games? Are heroes as boring as Elliot says they are?

Also, Tom reminisces about the good old JRPGs of old as he takes part in the eight overlapping stories of new Switch exclusive Octopath Traveler!
