Checkpoint Intimates: The Online Toxicity Conversation

Checkpoint Intimates is a weekly podcast where two members of the team go one-on-one on a topic that they both feel strongly about, talking in a more deeper and, yes, intimate context.

This week, Elliot and Jason are on board to talk about how companies respond to online toxicity. Rainbow Six: Siege has taken a hard stance against slurs: homophobia, transphobia, racism, etc. Players are immediately being banned without warning. The new zero tolerance policy is great to see but it’s also leading to false reports and incorrect punishments. A new tactic within the game is to goat your opponent into slurring so that they get banned and give you an advantage.

What is the best system to deal with online toxicy? What have other companies done historically? Do you give the player the power to mute others and leave the censorship to the player? Do you censor certain words so they don’t appear and leave it at that? Do you allow players to report and review instances on a case by case basis? Or immediately punish players based on an autodetect system?
