Composer Jonathan Mills, former director of both the Melbourne and Edinburgh Festivals (amongst many other roles), chats with David and Sue about hippy architects Walter Burley Griffin & Marion Mahony and flagellating composer Percy Grainger as challengers of the status quo of the 1910s and ’20s. Canberra could have been so different if Griffin & Mahony’s plans had been adopted. Grainger devised free music machines, the precursors of today’s synthesizers.
Jonathan has devised and curated Cultural Collisions for this year’s Melbourne Festival so that we can look back to see how we can look forward through the eyes of radicals who had a dream of a different Australia.
Cultural Collisions is at the University of Melbourne until 23 October. Many events are free.
Johnathan also talks with David and Sue about the role of culture and the arts as a space to have those conversations about differences that might otherwise be under political restraint. And he chats about what it’s like to be knighted.
If you’re interested in different music, different instruments, you might also like to listen to the Friday Drive podcast with Ashley Dyer about his upcoming show Tremor.
