David and Ande talk to Simon Myers who is producing a series of shows called “The Soundtrack Sessions” where local artists sing and play songs from the soundtracks of some iconic movies. The shows are on at The Playhouse at Arts Centre Melbourne.
The first is The Soundtrack Sessions: Songs of The Big Chill which is on Friday 1st December 2017 at 8pm.
“Take a deep dive into one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. When The Big Chill hit screens in 1983 its immaculate use of classic soul, Motown and pop-rock hits from the 60s and 70s instantly dug hooks into the popular imagination. Three decades later and it hasn’t aged a day. Now the spirits of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and more will be channeled by some of Melbourne’s hottest instrumental maestros – Cookin’ on 3 Burners with guests Kylie Auldist, Andrew De Silva, Stella Angelico and Nina Ferro – for a one-night only event to rekindle the fire of a soundtrack that transcends the years”
The second is The Soundtrack Sessions: Songs of Pulp Fiction which is on Saturday 2nd December 2017 at 8pm.
“Quentin Tarantino’s breakout black comedy Pulp Fiction didn’t just change the face of cinema – it reinvented the role of a movie soundtrack. From the opening guitar howl of Dick Dale’s Misirlou to the infectious funk of Kool and the Gang’s Jungle Boogie, this was a film that made music a character in itself, leading us by the ears through a hilarious and macabre Los Angeles underworld of mobsters and madmen.
The Meltdown are Melbourne’s coolest purveyors of radioactive gospel, and together with guest artists Loretta Miller and Benny Walker they’re sinking their southern soul fangs into a soundtrack as juicy as a Royale with Cheese. Wrap your head around tracks like Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon and Son of a Preacher Man, and just try not to twist like Uma Thurman when Chuck Berry’s You Never Can Tell gets firing. An anarchic mix of dirty rock ‘n’ roll, screaming surf, unironic pop and cool-as-hell soul, this is a lineup of songs that will take you back to one of the defining moments in modern Hollywood history.”
Tickets are available from the Arts Centre Melbourne website.
