INTERVIEW: Brett from the Laird Hotel about the latest release of works by Stuart Black (1937-2007)

David & Dolly talk to Brett from the Laird Hotel about the latest release of works by artist Stuart Black (1937-2007) and the exhibition The Incessant Hunt. The Exhibition is being held at the Tacit Galleries 123a Gipps Street, Collingwood. The Exhibition runs from Wednesday 23 May until 17 June. Details can be found on their website..

The exhibition is described as follows on the website:

“Obviously and unashamedly homosexual, purposely ambiguous, I shroud the issue of whether the author conceives his work as voyeur, participant, commentator, disbeliever or cynic… I make revelations without explanations.” Stuart Black, ‘America through a Stranger’s Eyes’ 1978.

Bummer and The Laird are proud to present the latest release of works by Stuart Black (1937-2007) for exhibition over four weeks at Tacit Galleries, Collingwood.

THE INCESSANT HUNT beautifully sums up Stuart’s search for satisfaction in the nooks and crannies of mid 1970-s San Francisco.

The paintings document the heady pre-HIV/AIDS days of constant anonymous recreational sex.

“Stuart was at the centre of a totally new world where the sheer concentration of gay people in one location had no parallel in history” says curator, arts writer and friend Craig Judd.

At the time, Black stated they were the most honest paintings he’d ever done, “The source material was right in front of me, right within my grasp.”

The majority of these works have not been exhibited in public since Stuart’s 1978 ‘Still Life’ exhibition – which Judd states, “was an important but until now overlooked event. Arguably the first ‘out and proud’ gay exhibition staged in a commercial gallery in Australia.”

This is a not-for-profit exhibition. Part of proceeds will go towards cataloging, framing and exhibiting further works. The remainder of funds will benefit Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives.
