Presenter: Michael Stevens, Affinity Services
In 2011 the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) commissioned research into the needs and experiences of Rainbow Community mental health and alcohol and drug service users in the region. In line with similar international research, the resulting report “Let’s Talk About Sex … sexuality and gender” showed we are over-represented in using these services
and that mainstream mental-health services are failing our communities as a result of cisgendered and heteronormative cultural dominance.
To improve the therapeutic outcome for Rainbow Community clients the ADHB has contracted Affinity Services, a mental health NGO, to go into services in the region and raise their levels of cultural competency to improve service delivery to Rainbow Community clients.
