Australia’s caught Matildas fever with Bec Shaw

Australia has Matilda’s fever, and why shouldn’t they! Their quarter final against France recorded the largest tv broadcast audience since Cathy Freman’s 400m Gold at the 2000 Olympics, and that number is bigger than ANY AFL Grand Final Match viewership numbers recorded.

Victorians are braving the freezing temperatures to stand in Federation square together in record numbers to watch the Matilda’s compete in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, plus nearly every queer venue in Melbourne is forgoing their drag bingo nights tonight to make way for our communities to come together and watch them compete against England.

Not only do we love to see the Matilda’s celebrating their true selves and queer pride in sport, I think the most surprising statistic of all isn’t the fact that Matilda’s jerseys are reportedly flying off the shelves outselling Socceroo’s two to one, but the fact that Rach and Dean from JOY Breakfast couldn’t be more excited to talk about sport even thoughthey have no idea what we are talking about.

So, to share in our Matilda’s fever they were joined by writer and comedian Bec Shaw, who’s article in the Guardian last week perfectly captured the joy we are all feeling watching the Matilda’s continue to shine and soar.
