While Australians love a public holiday, that doesn’t mean we always love WHY one exists, and with Australia Day AKA Invasion Day happening this week, conversations and emotions about the day and what it means can create some heated debate.
Yesterday artists Kitty Obsidian, a proud Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi performer and producer wrote an article published in Pedestrian. They put the call out about booking first nations artists for invasion day events, and to also make sure you pay them properly.
That reminded us that, at a time where a heavy debate can happen about the date, there are other ways that you can show your support for first nations people and artists, by supporting their work an events over the public holiday.
Joining us now all the way from Rocky is Janty Blair, winner of the Melbourne International Comedy Festval’s Deadly Funny who, before pivoting to comedy sharing the stories and life experience of her community, dedicated to working with her mob in community health.
