Breast Screening in the LGBTQIA+ Community: Get yourself a bosom buddy!!

Chances are that if you are a person you have been touched by breast cancer in some way. 

Maybe you are living with a diagnosis currently – perhaps you are a survivor – but almost certainly in Australia today, you know somebody who has been diagnosed or lost a loved one.

• Breast cancer accounts for 14% of all cancer deaths in Australian women with over 3200 of us dying from it each year and the rates have increased year on year.
• The good news is that Australia has one of the best breast cancer survival rates in the world and we live in a country that offers free mammograms to all women aged 50-74 every 2 years and that early detection is key to survival.
• While the statistics are sobering – 1 in 7 Australian women will likely be diagnosed in their life – one statistic that has me flummoxed is that women in the LGBTQIA+ community are more than twice as likely to never have a breast screen.

• To help unpack that host Dee Mason was joined by BreastScreen Victoria’s CEO Rita Butera.
