Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2014: Camp Beaverton

Uncategorized

In the dusty white plains of the Nevada Desert, 60,000 people come together each year to create a temporary city called Burning Man, based on principles of radical self-expression. Filmmakers Ana Grillo and Beth Nelsen travel to Camp Beaverton, the desert oasis where lesbians, bisexuals and trans* come to play and explore their sexual and personal boundaries.

The camp creates a safe space for all women to chill out but is famous for it’s ‘strap-on-a-thon’ sex play party. From the first time ‘burners’ to the experienced Co-Mayor of Beaverton, this documentary focuses on exploring what attracts women to the community and sexual playpen. As a new Beaver says “show up with your whole self and an open heart” to delve into the tight sisterhood of Camp Beaverton. (Kate Lefoe)

  • Filmmaker Beth Nelsen will be in attendance for a Q&A with panelists from the Gender Studies Program in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne.
  • Professor Jeanette Hoorn, Director of Gender Studies and Professor of Visual Cultures, Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne
