Transgender Day of Remembrance Show 2015

Join Andrea and Michelle as they discuss the significance of Transgender Day of Remembrance and what it means to the community. They are joined by special guest, leading Senior Police Officer Gabby Tyacke Police GLLO (Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officer), Ina Tina and Rebeca.

Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialise those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held on 20 November to honor Rita Hester who was murder on 28 November 28 1998.

Transgender Day of Remembrance has been observed as the conclusion of Transgender Awareness Week, which is a time for transgender people and their allies to take action and bring attention to violence, hatred and vilification, our community faces, by educating the broader community of the issues that transgender people face on a daily basis.

Gabby, Victoria Police GLLO, joined us directly after the Transgender Day of Remembrance event that was held at Treasury Theater at midday. She talks about the amazing positive response as well as the positive changes throughout the Victoria Police Force with greater awareness of LGBTIQ issues.

The Whole of Government Pride Network put on the event for Transgender Day of Remembrance. With representatives from Transgender Victoria, YGender and FTM Shed who spoke about their experiences.

Tina Ina and Rebeca talked about the challenges that transgender and gender diverse people face on a daily basis. The horrible past histories of transphobic hate crimes, murders and suicides. The changing attitudes toward transgender people, leading to a far more positive future.

They also talk about how great and fulfilling it is to be accepted into society as a person.
