The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial ceremony is co-ordinated worldwide by the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) and hosted in Melbourne by Living Positive Victoria with the support of the Victorian AIDS Council, JOY 94.9, City of Melbourne and Positive Women Victoria.
The Candlelight Memorial, one of the world’s oldest and largest grassroots mobilisation campaigns for HIV awareness in the world. It began in 1983, and takes place every third Sunday in May, led by a coalition of some 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries. Last year saw more than 200,000 people attend Memorials around the globe.
With 37 million people living with HIV today, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial serves as an important community mobilisation campaign to raise social consciousness about HIV and AIDS, breaking down barriers of stigma and discrimination, and giving hope to new generations.
