Two years ago it was impossible to get the AFL to come to the table to discuss homophobia in sport. On Saturday 3 May 2014, the AFL were providing the tables, chairs and a VIP luncheon for 80 invited guests at the pre-match function for the inaugural Pride Cup.
Two arch-rivals, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction battled for Aussie Rules first ever rainbow round, to win the Pride Cup, celebrating sexual diversity and inclusion in sport. Yarra Glen took home the prize, a fitting result for the club that still to this day, has the only Gay Aussie Rules Footballer in the nation, Jason Ball.
