Several critics and Catholic figures have labelled the Conclave as anti-Catholic, arguing that it perpetuates negative stereotypes about the Church.
In response to these criticisms, screenwriter Peter Straughan defended the film, asserting it is not anti-Catholic and emphasising that it aims to highlight the Church’s need to reconnect with its spiritual core amidst its powerful operations.
