Mick’s Picks: Semi 2
Semi Final 2 is packed with a huge number of awesome songs, so picking my top 5 was quite an effort. However, here goes. Let the comments fly!
#5: Malta
Gianluca – Tomorrow
Malta seems to be enjoying the nice boy, nice song criteria for their national selections. Last year, it was nice lad Kurt Calleja. This year, it’s nice boy Gianluca. Some people (ahem, Hikaru) have scoffed at this particular song. But I like it. It should appeal to those European Bruno Mars and Jason Mraz lovers and the girls who want to find that special man that they bumped into on the way to the library. It is for that latter reason that I like it.

#4: Greece
Koza Mostra ft. Agathon Iakovidis – Alcohol is Free
Greeks are only wishing that alcohol was indeed free at the moment! Who would’ve thought that (handsome) Greek men in kilts would be representing the great poor nation in Malmö? If your toes aren’t tapping after a listen to this one, you obviously need a shot of Ouzo. If you don’t get charged exorbitant prices for it, you might even want two.

#3: San Marino
Valentina Monetta – Crisalide (Vola)
Although Valentina did bomb out last year with her song about Facebook Social Networks, this song is no oh oh. Granted, it does start out slowly and very ballad-like, but the bigness of it by the end makes up for it. And just like many other songs this year, there’s a butterfly theme. The question is, as wonderful as breaking out of a chrysalis in a figurative sense is, it’s not really the prettiest of things in real life… Hello choreography.

#2: Finland
Krista Siegfrids – Marry Me
I really am a big fan of the whole Nordic dominatrix thing that Krista’s pulling off in the video. Actually, I wonder where she got her leathers… Anyway, back to the song and it’s the one that you’re going to be singing over and over again. Earworms only wish they were this good at digging into someone’s brain and staying there. If you’re not singing ding, dong while brushing your teeth of an evening, it’s obvious that you haven’t listened to this song enough. The plus side to this one is that Krista is a big fan of marriage equality, so not only do you have a song that you can’t get out of your head but is also championing (with leather and cuffs) the equality cause. Perfect!

#1: Iceland
Eythor Ingi – Ég Á Líf
This song, in a word, is pretty. In a year of ballads, Eythor has got himself a song that allows you to ponder, even though you have no idea of what he’s singing about. After watching the video about 50 times, I still don’t actually know what the heck is happening in it. Is he talking to himself? Does he wish he’s a child again? Is he an artist who wishes he could get an exhibition at NGV? Is he trying to get out of the fish trade and be a diver instead? No one can say. But the song’s still pretty and I like it… nearly as much as I like Eythor’s pretty blond hair and scruffiness. Nearly.
