Last year’s Portuguese entry “A Luta e alegria” (“the struggle is happiness”) was a comical allusion to 1970s Revolutionary Portugal. In the first of two reports covering Portuguese entries in the 1960s and 1970s, we examine how the repressive Salazar regime used Eurovision as a way of promoting itself, and how Portuguese artists also used the contest as a way of speaking out against the repression.
