It’s Molly! And she’s an unknown!
The BBC have announced their representative for Copenhagen… and she’s not an oldie!
Molly Smitten-Downes has been chosen by the British broadcaster to perform Children of the Universe in the Grand Final on 10 May.
The 26 year old singer and songwriter from Leicestershire was asked to write a song for Copenhagen after being discovered through BBC Introducing, the Beeb’s unsigned music platform. Using just her first name on stage, Molly has been performing for over ten years and has won multiple music awards for unsigned artists.
BBC’s new Eurovision producer, Guy Freeman, gave some indication of a change in tack last week when he blogged about this year’s Eurovision selection, writing
In trying to practice that art [of a good live performance], we all listened to a great many potential songs and looked at footage of a great many artists performing live. Nothing was quite right until we looked at a resource right under our nose: BBC Introducing. It was a real treat to discover the work of artists highlighted by BBC Introducing and what most excited us was the quality of singer-song writing.
Will this change in direction possibly herald a change in the UK’s fortunes in May?
Check out the track as performed live on the BBC’s Launch show.
