How do you describe a man who’s an artist, a performer, a writer and creator of one of the greatest personalities in modern Australian history, Constantina Bush?
Kamahi comes from Katherine in the Northern Territory, but he’s one of those ‘Black Renaissance’ artists who travels the country, and the globe, navigating many different worlds.
Kath and bryan catch Kamahi in his ornate Charles Blackman Hotel suite while he’s in Melbourne presenting the Malthouse Theatre production, The Shadow King – an Aboriginal adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear, in which Kamahi plays the crucial role of the Fool.
We discuss the theatre show, Kamahi’s visual art and the role many people probably know him best as, the gloriously myall* Constantina Bush.
*A word Kamahi and bryan reveal to mean ‘not polished’, ‘raw’, ‘a bit of a diamond in the rough’ – listen in for a bit of context to the term.
