This week we focus on female artists. Of course women have always made music, but that doesn’t mean that there haven’t been barriers for women in the music industry as in every other industry. Despite the challenges, and despite being vastly outnumbered by men, the 1970s was really a time of women in rock and pop music beginning to have more control over their own material and writing, making, producing and crafting their own sound. Many were at the top of their game or at the forefront of developing new musical genres. As usual, we had more material to choose from than time to play ti all, but we’ve loved putting together this curated list of some of our favourite female artists from the 1970s.
