<3 In episode 43 of Magic Portals we hear from one of my personal favourite albums, Straight Ahead. Straight Ahead is the debut solo album of Wipers frontman Greg Sage. It was released in 1985. Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis covered the song “On the Run” on his 1996 solo album, Martin + Me. Wipers front man Greg Sage embarked on a solo career after the recording of the Wipers’ brilliant album Over the Edge. His first solo release, Straight Ahead, proved to be his best output yet. The album is not as electrically charged as The Wipers material, but it features incredibly strong song compositions. Musically the album is sparse with simple instrumentation of guitar, bass, and very simply played drums, yet because of the raw emotion behind the playing and song composition, these bare bones arrangements never feel dull or overly simplistic. There is a melancholic thread throughout the album, with lyrical themes of isolation, loneliness and unrequited love (listen to songs “Soul’s Tongue and “Astro Cloud”). On Straight Ahead Greg Sage opens his chest and leaves his bleeding heart on the table for the world to see; his sincerity on this album is completely genuine. <3
