Katie plays her usual mix of brand-new and recent songs by Australian artists and a few classics by overseas artists, and does two interviews: one on the phone with Josh Teskey from local soul-blues band The Teskey Brothers, and the other with in-studio guest Larissa Tandy.
The Teskey Brothers, from the Yarra Valley, recently released a superb debut album called Half Mile Harvest. The band has been playing together for nine years but have broken through with this album and its lead single, ‘Pain and Misery’. As their media release says, ‘Listening to Half Mile Harvest you’d be forgiven for thinking it was the work of Stax Records alumni in Memphis circa ’67 rather than a group of twenty-somethings from the Yarra Valley.’ Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Australian expat Larissa Tandy was born in Sydney and raised on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula but now lives in Vancouver, Canada with her wife of five years, Elisabeth. She says that Australia has better band scenes, but Canada has marriage equality. Later this year she will make Nashville her base as the recipient of the Australia Council’s prestigious Nashville Songwriter Residency. Her new album, The Grip, is described in its media release as ‘a surprising, yet effortless blend of nineties alternative, vintage gospel and country soul’. It was recorded with well-known Canadian musician and producer Jim Bryson and a band of excellent Australian musicians, including Liz Stringer, Tracy McNeil, Cat Leahy, Ben Franz, John Flanagan and Ryan Tandy. Visit Larissa Tandy’s official website and follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
