The spirit of US folk singer Woody Guthrie, who died in 1967, is still alive and well. Melbourne musician Bruce Hearn comes into the studio to have a wide-ranging chat with Katie about the legendary artist. In 2017 Bruce, who is perhaps best known as a member of ska/reggae band Strange Tenants, formed a band called The Machinists and staged a few sold-out concerts to mark the 50th anniversary of Woody’s death. He and the band are putting on another concert this year in Melbourne, and he talks to Katie about how he first fell in love with Woody’s music, Woody’s influence on other artists and on folk music generally, how ‘This Land Is Your Land’ became an unofficial US national anthem, and more. He also performs live in the studio. Here is the all-Woody playlist:
- All You Fascists – Bruce Hearn & The Machinists
- Song to Woody – Bob Dylan
- Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key – Billy Bragg and Wilco
- I Ain’t Got No Home – Bruce Hearn (live in the studio)
- Vigilante Man – Corrina Steel
- Pastures of Plenty – Harry Belafonte
- This Land Is Your Land – Neil Young
- Will You Miss Me – Bruce Hearn & The Machinists
