Australia’s annual NAIDOC Week – known by many First Nations people as ‘Mob Christmas’ – celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Katie marks it every year with an hour of music by First Nations artists. This year’s songs have all been recently released, and they tell stories about the Menindee fish kills of 2019 and 2024; the fact that we have now been celebrating NAIDOC Week for 50 years; personal strength, growth and resilience; growing up in Darwin; Gumbaynggirr language and Country; and more. Here is the playlist:
- Nhaampa Puka – Leroy Johnson & The Waterbag Band
- A New Era – Sandy Louise ft. Michele Hetherington
- Little Bird – Nick Wymarra ft. Lydia Fairhall
- McMaster’s Ward – Roger Knox
- Kalkurr – Jungaji ft. Dean Brady
- Don’t Mean Nothin’ – Stiff Gins
- Darwin Son – Nathan May
- Jalay – Manduway
