Yesterday at the 24th Australasian HIV/AIDS Conference, the latest figures for new HIV diagnosis were revealed. New cases of HIV increased over 8% in 2011 to 1137 people, up from 1051 in 2010. Perhaps even more disturbing is that this latest figure represents a 50% increase in new HIV diagnosis, than for the same time a decade ago. The Executive Director of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO), Rob Lake, joins us to discuss these alarming figures. With rapid testing still yet to be approved for use here in Australia, the HIV Health sector has universally signed “The Melbourne Declaration” a four point Call-To-Action to the Federal Health Minister and a desperate attempt to help reduce further HIV infections. Then Avi Miller reveals to Dean why he chose to reveal his HIV positive status on air during an interview scheduled on Word For Word (this Sunday from 1pm on JOY 94.9). Last Tuesday evening Dean attended the Annual General Meeting for Victoria’s HIV peak body, People Living with HIV/AIDS (Vic). During the meeting it was announced that the organisation will now be known as Living Positive Victoria. Interim President Sam Venning, discusses the results of the AGM and Executive Officer Brent Allan shed light on the organisations name change and its strategic objectives over the coming years. Finally today, Andrew Wheatland discusses spirituality and sexuality, ahead of tomorrow night’s special two hour outside broadcast titled, “Freedom of Spirit”.
