Ballart Spectrum to provide much needed sparkle.

On February 12th, a motion was put to the Ballarat City Council, by the (fairly recently elected) Greens councillor, Belinda Coates. This motion put it that the council affirms its support to the “No To Homophobia” campaign (and that campaign’s “Promise” initiative), and was passed unanimously.

This development was announced by Councillor Coates on twitter, which began a twitter discussion, and then a *real* conversation, between councillor Coates and local gay resident Andrew Heaver.  Seeking clarification on whether this symbolic gesture was being accompanied by practical steps to make Ballarat a safer and more welcoming city for LGBTI residents, Andrew has formed a new LGBTI community organisation called Ballarat Spectrum.

Listeners with a Ballarat connection are encouraged to check out the Facebook group; they just need to tap “Ballarat Spectrum” into Facebook’s search function to find us. Then ask to join.

Also keep an eye out for further announcements regarding the proposed community forum. The event will be publicised on the Ballarat Spectrum facebook page, and hopefully within local (Ballarat) media and other appropriate outlets.

Ogge’s Art of the CarnivaleArtSpiegelworldInvite

To coincide with the current Melbourne season of Empire by Spiegelworld on the Rooftop at Crown, a never-before-seen art exhibition is being presented to celebrate The Art of Spiegelworld by Mark Ogge.  Dean discusses with Mark, his inspirations drawn from the iconic imagery of carnivals past and his long working history with Spiegelworld.

The feature of this retrospective exhibition is a large three-dimensional, mechanically operated diorama built by Mark’s team which brings his Spiegelworld paintings to life; a vintage proscenium arch stage filled with moving acrobats, aerial artists and other curiosities. The piece was commissioned by Ross Mollison to celebrate the January opening of the show Vegas Nocturne at the new Spiegelworld venue Rose.Rabbit.Lie at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. The stunning work is reminiscent of Martin Engelbrecht’s 18th century miniature paper theatres and Daguerre’s popular diorama theatre in early 19th century Paris. It has been a huge technical challenge with more than 20 individual motors animating the characters.

Metamorphis Theatre Company Re-emerges

Metamorphis Theatre Company has turned to the movie, ‘My own Private Idaho’ for their latest show. But IDAHO isn’t an adaption of the film; instead it looks to celebrity and its cult status as a story of two hustlers who embark on a journey of self-discovery, debates about sexuality, identity and society as signposts to explore. Hollywood harvests life through plots and narratives.

As Jessi Lewis explains, IDAHO engages the film and its soundtrack, then translates and rewrites it, rendering alternative landscapes where we can project ourselves, identify and recognize our own subjectivity.
