Summer special – preparing for thunderstorms and fireworks

Along with fun and sun, summer also brings loud noises, courtesy of firework displays and thunderstorms. While many of us love seeing the sky light up in a technicolour wonderland, or as a result of Mother Nature, for our pets storms and pyrotechnics can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety.

On this edition of JOY’s very own show about pets, the Pets-A-Loud team is going to take a look at some of the things pet owners can do to help their pets stay calm during storms and fireworks this summer.

• Does your pet get scared during storms or firework displays? Dr Trepheena Hunter from The Lost Dogs’ Home gives us some tips on what pet owners can do to help their pets stay calm during firework displays and storms.
• For shelters and pounds around the country, the day after a firework display or thunderstorm can be extremely busy. We find out why.
• Losing a pet can be a stressful experience for the whole family. We give you some tips on what you can do to help when looking for a lost pet.
