Sonja Hammer on Second Breakfast Thursday the 19th of November spoke to two lovely people who are behind the Made in Melbourne Film Festival on NOW in Melbourne this weekend! She spoke to the Festival Director Ivan Malekin and Media and Publicity person Cory Corbett about their passion for quality independent films that are made by Melbournians.
What is MIMFF ? : ‘ Is an exclusive showcase for Melbourne filmmakers and films that are ‘Made in Melbourne’. MIM celebrates the desire, drive, and diversity of our local film community by screening the very best films Melbourne has to offer.
Now in our seventh year, MIM continues to grow and offer filmmakers fantastic prizes and accolades, including $1000 to our Opening Night Best Film. This year the festival received a record number of submissions and will be bigger than ever before, running over four nights at the Backlot Studios in Southbank and highlighting three outstanding feature films, the family-friendly High School Showcase, plus our usual short film competitions on the Opening and Closing Nights.
In 2014 the festival introduced several new initiatives, all of which are returning in 2015:
– Weekend Matinée Sessions. With so many quality films we needed more sessions to honour the filmmakers. Matinée sessions were an experiment which proved successful – well attended, a relaxed atmosphere, popcorn and drinks and good flicks out of the afternoon heat.
– New Awards. Best Film, Audience Choice, Best Director, Best Actor.
– Industry Judges. More awards meant we invited experienced industry figures for the first time to view the films and elect overall winners on Opening and Closing Nights. Again, this proved successful, and industry judges our returning to MIM in 2015.
Plus we’re introducing a few more initiatives:
– New awards ‘Best Feature Film’ plus ‘Audience Choice’ at the Movie Matinée Shorts session.
– Melbourne Music Showcase. Over the years we have screened many music videos but this is the first time we are gathering the best of Melbourne music and filmmaking together in one session. Imaginative video clips combined with head bopping tunes, kicked off by a free live music set and a good old fashioned BBQ.
And with an ever growing list of sponsors and partners, a dedicated team behind the scenes, who knows what other surprises will be revealed along the way. One thing is for sure … MIM will always celebrate our city and our creativity.
The festival also includes queer film The Dream Children made totally in Melbourne !
The Made In Melbourne Film Festival. All local. All Melbourne.
