Interview – Ricki Coughlan talks with Demetra

In this episode of Sidelined Extra Time we are delighted to chat with Ricki Coughlan (she/her).

Ricki shares with us her insights into being an elite middle distance runner (38:02), being outed in the early 1990s as a transgendered women (13:20), a time when the word transgender wasn’t in use, becoming a celebrity and inspiration to young and old alike, what leadership looks like in sport inclusiveness (33:15), her reflections on how sport has been gendered since women have been able to compete, and what the evolution of categories in sport may look like with the increasing realisation  that competitive advantage goes beyond gender (43:40).

We also learn about another side to Ricki. Her passion and vocation as an ornithologist (50:29), what nature and birds can teach us, and living your best life.
