Interviews: We’re celebrating International Lesbian Visibility Day 2023!

This week on Sidelined, Soupy, Demetra and Jacs are acknowledging International Lesbian Visibility Day 2023. A day to recognise and celebrate the contributions of lesbian women around the world in politics, culture and sport – so we’re celebrating lesbians in sport! It’s a then and now and into the future of sport which is increasingly welcoming the LGBTIQA+ community thanks to some amazing lesbians!

For the weekly sporting headline, Tess Gilfedder the new President of AFL team Essendon’s Pride group the Purple Bombers  shares what’s happening in the fan-based movement towards an AFL Pride Round and how you can get involved!  (2:42)

In Soupy’s Surprising Sport, the focus is on a specialist sport – roller derby and amazingly fun and ferocious full contact sport! Bama Hurley, President of the Convict City Rollers based in Tasmania gives us the low down on why you should get your skates on! (11:00)

In Demetra’s Drama, Demetra talks with 78er Penny Gulliver, founder and Chief Instructor of GLMA-Gay Lesbian Martial Arts.  Penny has been teaching people self defense, kick boxing and kung fu for over 40 years and has been at the forefront of fighting for LGBTIQA+ and women’s rights. And continues to drive acceptance, equality and change. Considering the Gay Games later this year? Now if your opportunity! Reach out, have a chat and see what is possible! (22:00)

In A Chat With Jacs, Sze Sze Rowlinson, professional Muay Thai fighter and amateur boxer, has founded the Queer Combat Collective (QCC)! If you want to feel empowered and meet new people – you might find that combat is a place you can call home. Check out the QCC socials! (31:37)
