Ash Unicombe, Assistant Coach of the Melbourne Chargers Rugby Club – Melbourne’s gay and inclusive rugby club shares his love of the sport, how he got involved, how you can get involved and the exciting Surf v Turf Fundraiser against Melbourne Surge Water Polo Club. (4:30)
Demetra and Jacs headed along to watch the Melbourne Chargers compete in the annual Pride Cup where this year the team went head to head with Monash University Rugby Club. It was a Festival of Rugby with all teams taking part wearing rainbow-coloured socks, playing on a pitch with a rainbow flag painted on the grass, and rainbow flags proudly flying
The Pride Cup is part of the official Pride Round and part of Rugby Victoria’s commitment to promoting and supporting the diversity and inclusion of LGBTQI+ rugby participants, communities and families.
In A Chat With Jacs, Jacs spoke with Neil Hay, Rugby Victoria President and on the Board of Directors of the Melbourne Rebels. Neil was instrumental in the current success of the Melbourne Chargers being a previous head coach of Melbourne’s gay and inclusive rugby team in the early days. Neil shares why he coached the Chargers, why inclusion is important, the ground-breaking research undertaken with Monash University to stop homophobic language in sport and the future of rugby for the LGBTIQA+ community.
