This week on Sidelined, Soupy, Demetra and Jacs focus on two fantastic winter sports of netball and rugby as we brave the wind, rain and the cold, and the sport of wrestling for those who prefer to stay toasty warm indoors.
But first is our weekly sporting headline and we chat with Beau Newell, National Inclusion Manager, Pride In Sport about the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Trans and gender diverse inclusion guidelines for elite sport which were recently released. Beau talks us through the Guidelines and how they reinforce the importance of inclusion, and that there is a place for trans and gender diverse athletes in elite sport. Read the AIS Guidelines – Joint Statement by Pride In Sport, Proud2Play, Pride Cup and Equality Australia. (2:04)
In A Chat With Jacs, the talented Netboy Riley Richardson, member of the Australian Open Men’s netball team shares how he found his passion for this iconic Aussie sport, pathways for getting involved, and his experience of sport, authenticity, acceptance and inclusion. Riley gives us the low-down on whether the Wing Defence position is needed or a nice to have, and there is a drum roll moment with talk of a rebrand! (12:42)
In Demetra’s Drama, Demetra talks with Melanie Kawa, semi-professional rugby player with an eighteen year career in domestic and international rugby in the USA and France. Hailing from Papua New Guinea, our incredible Ally Melanie is the former captain of the PNG national 7s & 15s teams on the World Rugby stage and shares how she is changing the game for women in sport on and off the field with pay parity, and on the mic! (22:13)
In Soupy’s Surprising Sport, Soupy heads to the Melbourne Wranglers Wrestling Club to see whether wrestling might be the sport for him as well as supporting the West Coast Eagles. It’s certainly a club that is on a mission to ensure that all people, of all genders and all sexualities feel welcome and included in the sport of freestyle wrestling! (33:55)
