This week on Sidelined, Soupy, Demetra and Jacs are joined by Dion Alexander, Mr Gay Pride Australia 2022 and Rainbow Swan, to provide an update on the upshot of the first meeting of the reinvigorated AFL Pride Collective, what was discussed, which AFL Pride groups attended and the big plans afoot! What an amazing sporting highlight!
For the weekly sporting headline, Dr Ryan Storr, Diversity + inclusion researcher and consultant, and Founder ‘The Diversity Storr’ provided an insightful response to the news that transgender athlete Lexi Rodgers had her application refused by Basketball Australia to join the Kilsyth Cobras in the WNBL1 South basketball league.
In A Chat With Jacs, Bobby Macumber, MC, comedian, presenter and lover of sport shared the incredible success of the inaugural Gather Round in Adelaide being a host of four games across the amazing event involving 18 AFL teams, 9 games and held at three venues! Bobby also shared the huge impact of sport as a means of social change and a special moment for her with the great Nicky Winmar.
In Demetra’s Drama, Martin Stark, Founder and CEO of the inaugural World Gay Boxing Championships provides an update on how the world-first event played out during Sydney World Pride 2023 and the results of the global anonymous snapshot survey on the experience of LGBTQIA+ athletes and allies in boxing which he conducted.
In Soupy’s Surprising Sport, it was talk of which surprising sporting challenges the team would attempt for the annual JOY 94.9 Radiothon between 29th April and 5th May. If you would like to Unbolt the vault, email in a sporting challenge to sidelined@joy.org.au for the team and then donate/become a member during the show on Wednesday 3rd May and you could win big! JOY 94.9 will also be a winner keeping the station on air and supporting the LGBTIQA+ community all year round!
And then the conversation turned to soccer!
