This week on Sidelined, Soupy, Demetra and Jacs are encouraging our wonderful JOYsters to support keeping queer voices, stories, achievements and successes on the air and heard by renewing memberships, becoming a member, donating or contributing to JOY 94.9’s annual fundraiser – Radiothon! Thank you to everyone who did so during the show and right across Radiothon week! We are blessed and humbled by the amazing support!
The aim of Sidelined aligns with the theme of Radiothon 2023 – Together We Thrive – ensuring the LGBTIQA+ community thrives in sport by each week enabling passionate, talented, positive, fearless and trail-blazing guests to have a voice and share how to thrive across all aspects of the sporting landscape in Australia and across the world.
Jacqui Louder, Sport psychologist for the Collingwood Football Club men’s and women’s program and Melbourne Storm, shares how to have a thriving mindset and advice of how clubs can provide an environment to support LGBTIQA+ athletes and staff. (1:39)
In Demetra’s Drama, Demetra talks with Dr Kasey Symons, Research Fellow Sport Innovation Research Group Swinburne University and Founder of Siren Sport about how to thrive in sports media. There is an incredible opportunity available for women and non-binary people to join the Emerging Sports Partnership Program with ABC Sport with the aim of elevating diverse voices in sport. (11:30)
In A Chat With Jacs, we hear how to thrive as an athlete and a queer athlete through hearing the incredible journey of Australian Paralympian Rower – Nikki Ayers. After thriving as an elite rugby union player, Nikki overcame adversity after an injury to pivot into para-rowing with Rowing Australia debuting at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and is now in training for the Paris Olympics 2024.
Nikki as an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Thrive with Pride program ambassador is a positive role model striving to be a champion of change in creating an environment for all athletes to feel comfortable within their sporting organisation. (21:49)
In Soupy’s Surprising Sport, the focus is on surprising sporting challenges – the Tough Mudder and Zombie Evacuation Race and the team undergo their own sporting challenges during the show with underwhelming results. It appears they can talk the talk, but can Demetra shoot some hoops, can Soupy hit a bullseye on the dartboard and can Jacs putt for dough – apparently not! So it was a hilarious punishment of push-ups and star jumps! (31:00)
To close the extra special Radiothon show, Pez – President of the Melbourne Chargers shared how support for LGBTIQA+ sport is continuing to thrive with the third Pride Cup event to be held on the coming weekend! Go Chargers! (38:00)
