Brendan chats with David about the upcoming Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) 30Jul – 16Aug. MIFF is doing its Night Shift genre again, i.e. horror, thriller or seedier type films and Brendan briefly outlines three that stand out for him: a new movie by Karyn Kusama called The Invitation, a doco called The Nightmare about all things scary and Adam Wingard’s The Guest which includes great 80s style synthesizer music. Regarding LGBTI content, there’s Holding The Man, a very good adaptation from play to film and Grant Scicluna’s film Downriver which was funded through crowdfunding.
Guests interviewed today are:
Deb Stahle who is co-founder of Nite Art which is a one night art event on 23 July from 6 – 11pm in the City Centre, the Arts Precinct and Melbourne Uni and includes 75 plus artists and 30 venues. Deb speaks of her sales/marketing background and her love of art. She could see art changing and evolving with an opportunity for new models in how people experience art, artists and the city. She found like-minded people and brought the ideas alive, giving birth to Nite Art. She describes the power of art, the importance of collaboration and the future of Nite Art.
Playwright Jane Miller and Director Alice Bishop talk about their theatre production Cuckoo at FortyFivedownstairs 8 – 26 July. This is a darkly comic story of a comfortably married couple whose lives are disrupted when a young man comes to their door claiming he’s been in an accident and that he has a connection with them. Jane and Alice talk about their backgrounds, collaboration and mutual admiration. There’s also a fascinating discussion of their writing and directing processes, especially with regard to this production.
