Brendan finished The Age Run for beyondblue and got a medal! He also checked out Open House which enables people to see places in the city not normally accessible such as Orica House, Total House, the Town Hall Balcony and Russell House Substation. He and David how popular Open House has become.
David talks about this year’s winner of The Archibald Prize for portraiture– won last week by Nigel Milsom for the portrait of his barrister Charles Waterstreet.
Brendan reviews the play Death and The Maiden which runs from 18 July to 22 August at the MTC. A political and revenge drama which he feels does fall flat at some stage but is still worth seeing.
Special guest today is:
Ted Gott has been an art curator for 30 years, with the last 14 years at the NGV– which he considers the most extraordinary gallery in Australia. He tells us of 2 Exhibitions, the first being this year’s Melbourne Winter Masterpiece, namely Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great running from 31 July to 8 November at NGV International. This is a spectacular exhibition of artworks from The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia, founded by Catherine in 1760s. He tells us of the remarkable Catherine who was a tireless & benevolent ruler (1762 to 1796) a great intellect and visionary with a passion for art which she started collecting immediately, starting with ancient gems, cameos and paintings. There are over 400 pieces in the exhibition including cameos, furniture, Rembrandts, van Dykes and a nude version of Mona Lisa!
Another exhibition opening soon at NGV is The Horse 14 August to 8 November comprised of 260 plus works which are drawn from the NGV itself and shows the horse in art, in a period spanning 1000BC to 2015AD.
