MIFF Films, Hermitage, Private Museums, Sophia Brous, Supersense

Arts, Design, Music, Performing Arts, TV & Film, Visual Arts

Brendan and David discuss a few choice films from MIFF. There is a lot of queer content including Grant Scicluna’s haunting film, Downriver and Do I sound gay? which addresses why some gay men don’t like the way they speak and go to great lengths to not stand out. There’s also Gayby Baby about kids who are growing up with gay or lesbian parents.

Our hosts also talk about Margaret Pomeranz who is a MIFF guest as well as retrospective films such as The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine (1968) which has amazing animation and the Maysles brothers’ extraordinary doco, Grey Gardens (1973) about an eccentric mother and daughter (relatives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis) living in a mansion in NY State that has seen better times.

Brendan is also looking forward to seeing Gasper Noé’s controversial and raunchy film, Love which even has a 3D version! He encourages everyone to go to MIFF. There is a huge selection of films.

David saw NGV’s exhibition, Masterpieces from the Hermitage (listen to our previous podcast for more info) and was most impressed with the presentation, feeling like he was in the palace itself, and was surrounded by some of the greatest masterpieces in the world.

David and Brendan then discuss private museums ( such as the Jewish and Hellenic Museums) and also the amazing Sophia Brous an eclectic musician/singer–heavily involved in the Music Industry– who was the director of the Jazz Festival in 2009-11 and is now involved with a weekend Arts Centre Event called Supersense 7 – 9 August. Here the Arts Centre will open up all its spaces for performers such as Gurrumul and John Spencer Blues Explosion and audiences walk from one space to another.
