Craig Christie, Lionia, Phillip Lee Curtis, Favourite Films

Arts, Comedy, Music, Performing Arts, TV & Film, Visual Arts

We have David, Brendan AND Daniel today!! They put it out there to listeners to name their favourite film and why. Brendan and Daniel talk about 3 current films 1) The Last Witch Hunter which is an action, horror, fantasy big budget vehicle for Vin Diesel which Brendan slept through despite the great special effects 2.5 stars 2) Crimson Peak directed by  Guillermo del Toro, who did Pan’s Labyrinth, starring Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain.  It’s a Gothic horror film that never really peaks 2.5 stars. 3) Bridge of Spies, a ‘legal’ thriller set during the cold war and a true story. A collaboration of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks and co-written by the Coen brothers. It looks good, has great attention to detail and intellectual clout 4 stars.

Todays guests are:

13:25 to 33:00 mins  Craig Christie—a prolific writer/composer of musicals- for children mostly.  Background—he used to teach drama and English for 10 years but music was always an interest and he used to write plays for the students which got him a publishing deal. He formed the student No Mates Theatre Company which was successful and started touring in the 80s including Europe and USA with original shows.  He had left teaching, had kids of his own and needed an income so he started writing musicals–with his first big musical being Crusade.  He approaches his creative work in an artisan way and said that commissions force him to be creative. He has since been churning out 2 shows per year and touring schools and spending half his time in the UK/Europe and has had productions such as Eurobeat at the West End. He has a body of work of 40 shows that have been performed around the world. This year the number of audience members for his shows has hit the 2 million mark.

Now he is collaborating on something new called ‘Get on with it’ about, and starring, Amy Golden a young British woman with profound Cerebral Palsy. They have worked on it since June and had a reading of the first draft in Mid October. They plan to launch this musical at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2016.

Craig then talks about music publishing and the importance of having an organisation to control licencing for your material.  His one is called Origin who have connections Worldwide and who are also releasing his first Songbook.

33:17 to 45:41 mins  Lionia—is an artist doing an Exhibition based on different cultures called Faces of the World shown on 7th November at The Trust at  405 Flinders St. These are a series of Portraits with faces of indigenous people and others from different cultures. Lionia came to Australia from Portugal when she was 7 and has always been fascinated with different cultures, people, customs, colour and diversity.  She was a fashion designer for 6 years but then got the travel bug.  When she returned she wanted to try something new.  To paint, to express herself. She has always been interested in people’s faces, especially their eyes, as she wants to get to the core of a person. She set herself a hectic pace in an artisan way like Craig above, and finished a substantial amount of 1.1 to 1.8 metre paintings in a short time (with support from husband and family).  She considers the exhibition to be an ‘event’ in that, apart from the giant paintings, it’ll have Japanese Taiko drummers, Tim Costello as a speaker representing World Vision, food, drink and a bar.

1:17:10 to 1:28:14 mins Phillip Lee Curtis is a Cabaret performer and storyteller whose first show was Who is Posh Lopez? He’s a graphic designer by day but since childhood and teenagehood has loved to sing, dance, write and tell stories. Between 13-15 years old he put on a lot of weight and became reclusive.  He stopped dancing and was too scared to sing.  A teacher suggested he write about his life which he did and also had a huge weightloss and tummy tuck. Posh Lopez was a persona to get him on the stage.  Noone knew he was on stage for 1st time. He killed a lot of Posh off as she was hard to play and became more himself.  Life happened, he wrote more and now has a new show called …and why do I care? On at the Butterfly Club 4th to 8th November. It picks up where it left off last time asking– What happens when you’ve achieved your goals but are no good at anything else like relationships etc?  It is a fun, camp, cheesy show with pop/rock music and heart. To get in contact with him go to twitter@poshlopez or facebook.com/poshlopez
