Interview: Stephen Zegala, Senior Curator-Monash Gallery of Art

Brendan and Neil speak to Stephen Zegala who is Senior Curator at the Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) and is here to talk about his arts background, the gallery and an exhibition called Under the sun: Reimagining Max Dupain’s Sunbaker on until 6 August at MGA in 860 Ferntree Gully Road, Wheelers Hill.

Stephen has been at MGA for 10 years now and, prior to that, had quite a zigzagging career path through the arts. This included studying art history& theory, doing research, being a critic, running contemporary arts spaces and working on heritage projects in Vanuatu for 10 years (which he details).

MGA is a photography gallery and Stephen talks about working with the collection and the intricacies of choosing what to show. Under the sun… is an exhibition from Sydney and shows ‘new works commissioned from 15 artists responding to Australian photographer Max Dupain’s iconic Sunbaker image’.
