Reviews: Niche films, Docos, Musical Theatre, The Butterfly Club

Brendan and Neil are ‘David-less’ today as he is having a day off. Brendan reviews films and musical theatre today, all the while discussing them with Neil.  The films reviewed are some smaller, more niche films and Brendan starts with Pedro Almodóvar’s Julieta (2016) which he can’t recommend enough–4.5stars. Next is Whiteley -an excellent doco about famous Australian artist Brett Whiteley4.5stars. In contrast to Whiteley, the doco I am Heath Ledger has a perfunctory stock-standard feel to it. Lastly there is Australian film Don’t Tell a true story about a woman who took on the church in Toowoomba. A powerful film with excellent performances–3.5stars.

Brendan then reviews live musical theatre and performances including My Fair Lady which was directed by Julie Andrews, and Trevor Ashley’s spectacular tribute to Shirley Bassey-Diamonds Are For Trevor-a  one off performance at Hamer Hall.  Brendan also went to The Butterfly Club for their winter preview and a couple of shows that stood out for him were Roulston and Young: Songs for Lovers (And Other Idiots) on from 20 to 25 June; and Tash York’s Adulting on from 11 to 16 July. Brendan also saw Spring Awakening The Musical at Chapel off Chapel which is on until 10 June.
