Fiona Brook Presents: Arts Journalism & Criticism in Aust today

Fiona Brook is the latest presenter to join Sunday Arts Magazine and is now doing a monthly segment. In today’s program she is discussing, with David and Brendan, the state of Arts journalism and criticism in Australia today. This topic is getting a lot of ‘air-time’ lately.

Points covered in this discussion include– the arts are getting less exposure in newspapers due to less journalists; discovering the new is part of a critic’s role; famous theatre companies sent an open letter to Fairfax about the importance of arts exposure; there’s a ‘save The Age Facebook page’; the high attendance rate to arts events in Melbourne; and an Arts Blog called Witness Performance & Review site is starting in 2018.

Fiona also talks about a play on at the Malthouse Theatre until 4 June called Wild Bore. It’s written by and stars 3 famous comediennes/performers and is about theatre criticism, where the protagonists respond to the criticism–which should never be done. It is getting very good reviews!

Fiona and our hosts then discuss critics, how they do their critiques, and the power/responsibility they have.
