Interview: Kate Fryer & Ella Bartoloma on new NICA circus show

Director of Physical Theatre & Circus Kate Fryer and performer Ella Bartoloma are here to talk about their show from the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) called Circosis: Left Brain, Right Brain on from 15 to 24 June at NICA in 55 Green St, Prahran.

Kate talks about NICA itself, her own background, & her method of directing/teaching/guiding the students who, in 3rd year, each put on their own final performance. She also describes the concepts behind the title, that linked the performances of 23 individual performances. These performances were not easy to link as they are extremely varied; ranging from being quite political to fun and outrageous.

Ella is one of the student performers and is in the Left Brain show.  This performance is part of her assessment. She is doing an aerial rope act and has decided to take a political stance about real fur use in fashion. The performance starts off quite nicely and then becomes bloody, gross and confronting! Both Kate and Ella later outline what’s next for them.
