Danielle Calder from the Melbourne Opera came into Sunday Arts Magazine talk about their latest production, Robert Devereux.
This is the third and final part of Melbourne Opera’s Gaetano Donizetti Tudor trilogy directed by Suzanne Chaundy with Greg Hocking and Raymond Lawrence conducting the Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra.
It is based very loosely on the career of the Earl of Essex, Robert Devereux was created for the opera by Donizetti and is sung in English. It tells the story of Elizabeth the Queen who loves Robert, the Earl, who loves Sara, Elizabeth’s favourite, who is married to Nottingham, Elizabeth’s counselor and Devereux’s best friend.
Melbourne Opera’s Robert Devereux is at the Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins St, Melbourne.
