Internationally-acclaimed Inventi Ensemble will present a free digital broadcast of Gustav Holst’s The Planets – a monumental classical music work that had its world-premiere at the grand Hawthorn Arts Centre last year. The digital broadcast will be available via the Boroondara Arts website 19 and 20 June 2020.
Audiences will have another rare opportunity to hear the work while accompanied by a majestic backdrop of intergalactic projections by animation artist James Josephides.
The Planets was written between 1914-1916 by British composer Gustav Holst to represent all the known planets from the solar system that can be seen from Earth at that time and their corresponding astrological character.
This performance also includes two works by acclaimed composer, Johannes Luebbers, who has emerged as one of Australia’s most interesting young composers, picking up a number of accolades including Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year and Jazz Work of the Year, both in 2011. Luebbers has also written music for the Tasmanian Symphony (with Kate Miller-Heidke and Missy Higgins), Orchestra Victoria (with Sinead O’Connor and Dan Sultan). Luebbers is joined by James Josephides, a Melbourne based designer and animator with a curious fascination with clouds, bringing The Planets to life.
Pioneered by Artistic Directors Melissa Doecke and Ben Opie, Inventi Ensemble first disrupted Australian music with their inventive style in early 2014. They have since gone on to perform extensively across Australia with a strong focus on endorsing young and local talent.
Internationally, they have performed at London’s South Bank with San Francisco’s Ensemble Parrallele, as well as music festivals across Europe, Abu Dhabi and the USA. Inventi Ensemble are renowned for their virtuosic playing and masterful treatment of large-scale works, and this new arrangement of The Planets is no exception. What was originally conceived for symphonic orchestra will be performed by five musicians on flute, oboe, violin, viola and cello.
Join Inventi Ensemble in deep space to explore the music of the spheres.
