An awe-inspiring Sunday Arts Magazine where the hosts welcome return guest, Jason Cavanagh, back to the studio.
Who is Jason Cavanagh? What has made Jason significant within the arts industry? What is the Motley Bauhaus? Listening to this episode will more than reveal the importance and significance of this incredible person.
“The Arts is criminally undervalued in Australia on all levels, from Government through society”(Jason Cavanagh on Sunday Arts Magazine, 10th March, 2024.)
Jason is a born arts entrepreneur. He started drawing “since he was old enough to hold a crayon”.(Jason Cavanagh on Sunday Arts Magazine, 10th March, 2024) When he moved from Sydney to Melbourne with his family and on finishing high school, his mother and teachers strongly urged him to start acting. As Jason had little interest in sport, acting would be a means through which he could meet other people. This was the beginning of a triumphant journey within the arts industry at a time when the industry was fighting to survive during a pandemic.
Jason wanted to create a space which operated commercially but was also able to support artists and emerging artists. Jason Cavanagh is the Founder of The Motley Bauhaus. The Motley Bauhaus originally opened in Fitzroy North in 2018. In January 2022 Jason opened a new, more multi-purpose Motley Bauhaus in the inner-city suburb of Carlton. The opening came as the arts industry had been suffering a huge setback due to the COVID pandemic.
The new Motley Bauhaus houses an expanded suite of creative spaces: a 75-seat black box theatre, spacious gallery, full-sized recording studio, dedicated cabaret stage, a dark room, and four working artists’ studios. In addition, there is two separate bar areas and a courtyard where people can mingle pre and post performance. There is also a workshop program featuring regular classes by local independent artists.
The Motley Bauhaus is open from 4pm when people are welcome to wander around and sight see. Otherwise, people are encouraged to make an appointment and book a preferred time.
