Former diplomat and now a historical fiction writer Madeleine Cleary chats about her life and her acclaimed debut novel ‘The Butterfly Women.’

Loretta and Robert discuss the sub genre ‘Hopepunk.’. They then ask Madeleine about her early life, her work as a book seller and her family connection with a brothel in Melbourne in the 19th century. They ask Madeleine her inspiration for her debut novel ‘The Butterfly Women’, the difficulty of writing an  historical novel and how she devised her characters. A discussion follows about power in the novel.
