Higgins candidates tell us why you should vote for them

Several candidates for the seat of Higgins join The Informer to discuss their battle to win the seat away from the Liberal party’s Kelly O’Dwyer.

Jessica Tregear (Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party), Rebecca O’Brien (Marriage Equality), Eleonora Gullone (Animal Justice Party), Robert Kennedy (Liberal Democrats) and Nancy Bassett (Nick Xenophon Team) join us to discuss why you should vote for them. A standing invitation for the Liberal Party’s Kelly O’Dwyer to join the program remains with her office.

We hope to have Carl Katter (from the Labor party) on Thursday June 30’s show. We also hope to have Rebecca O’Brien and Eleonora Gullone on again on the same show as Carl, as we didn’t give them enough time on Thursday June 23rd’s show.

We also asked each of the candidates on June 23rd’s show to provide short statements. Two got back to us.

Asked why Higgins voters should vote for them, they responded:

Robert Kennedy (Liberal Democrats):

“I will never vote for an increase in taxes, or a decrease in liberty.”

Eleonora Gullone (Animal Justice Party)

“Most people are appalled by animal cruelty. But did you know that the vast majority of cruelty inflicted upon animals is legal. It includes the miserable conditions and deaths endured by animals who are live exported and those on factory farms; the painful procedures inflicted upon animals in scientific experiments and animal testing for cosmetics and household products; the suffering and deaths of thousands of animals every year who are involved in circuses, rodeos, dog and horse racing, hunting and fishing. Much of the legalised cruelty inflicted upon animals is hidden from the public gaze and public knowledge about it is suppressed for fear it will affect consumers’ purchasing choices. Just like all industries, animal industries aim to maximise their profits. Profit maximisation involves cutting corners and, in industries that involve animals, that means increased suffering. Just like young and innocent children, animals have no power against exploitation and abuse. They need their interests to be defended and protected. The most effective way to do this is through political channels. That is why the Animal Justice Party is such an important political party and why as the AJP candidate for Higgins, I need your vote at the July election. People who are kind to animals are also kind to humans. Cruelty and kindness generalise across species. A better world for animals really does mean a better world for all. If you are one of the 96% of people who oppose animal cruelty (as shown in surveys of animal cruelty), the animals need you to protect their interests. You can do that by voting 1 for the Animal Justice Party in Higgins and the upper house on July 2nd.”
